The one habit that totally screws our weight loss journey is the way we snack. If you are like me, then most likely, it is not your meal that is difficult to manage, but it is the snacks that does you in.
Even if I try my best with the meal planning, I fail miserably when it comes to snacks. Chocolates, chips, crackers!!! Yikes!!
If you snack mindlessly throughout the day, you would surely pile up hundreds and thousands of calories without your knowledge. Just a bite of Mars, half a packet of Lays!! Have you ever seen the amount of calories and fat content in these products.
When I first started learning all about calories and fat and healthy eating, I was totally blown away by the sheer number of calories present in the chocolate “Mars”. Just to add, Mars is something I totally cannot live without. Give me half a dozen of those and I am sure to gulp down everything in a jiffy.
And just that you know, an average Mars bar of 58g contains approximately 258kcal and the way I workout, that would equal to half an hour of aerobic exercise. Wow!! That totally blew me away. Just one piece of instinct eating surely wasn’t too fair to do away with my hardwork.
The one thing that has helped me curb this unhealthy habit is following the “Golden 15 minute rule of Snacking”!!
All you need to do is, whenever the craving for anything unhealthy hits, just wait 15 minutes. Do not reach for that Chocolate or that Ice cream immediately. Go drink a glass of water. Think of all the hard work you have taken to reduce those 5 pounds or 10 pounds. Do you remember what it took you to lose that weight. Does the junk still look too inviting?? Reach for a carrot instead. Now after those precious 15 minutes, chances are, you have already realized it is so totally not worth it. But if you are still having that craving too strongly, make four portions of whatever you are craving for. Enjoy 1/4th of what you would have gulped down fully.
I strongly feel, if I don’t give in to my temptations once in a while, then all the bad habits kick in too strongly and I throw all the healthy habits up in the air and go on a full binge.
Follow this 15 minute rule every time the craving starts, I am sure, 90% of the time, you would have realized that “healthy you” is more important than that fat laden processed junk.
